Origin and history of the tomato

The 'Dark Galaxy' strain is a relative novelty from the USA. Like most blue and black tomato varieties, it didn't emerge until the early 21st century. It was developed by Brad Gates at Wild Boar Farms in California and was released as a strain in 2014.

Characteristics and taste of the 'Dark Galaxy' tomato variety

The 'Dark Galaxy' tomato variety grows indefinitely as a stick tomato and can grow up to 180 centimeters high. The round to flat-round, partly slightly ribbed fruits reach a weight of 50 to 100 grams and can vary somewhat in size. 'Dark Galaxy' lives up to its name because half of the medium-sized tomatoes are covered in a dark violet to black colour, which only selectively reveals the golden yellow to bright red basic colour. With a little imagination, the variety is reminiscent of the Milky Way on a clear night.
The tomatoes ripen from August, with the blue color becoming darker the more sunlight hits the fruit. The taste of the 'Dark Galaxy' is sweet and fresh, the deep red flesh is very juicy and tasty. OfWith this variety, you can obtain your own tomato seeds, because the Dark Galaxy tomato is seed-proof.

Dark Galaxy Tomato Growing and Care Tips

The 'Dark Galaxy' tomato variety can be grown in greenhouses, in containers and as an outdoor tomato. Outdoors, it should be protected from rain and adverse weather under a roof. Young plants of this extraordinary variety can be planted outdoors and in pots from mid-May. For this purpose, the largest possible planter should be chosen and filled with a special potting soil. Our Plantura organic tomato soil, for example, is produced in a climate-neutral manner and is completely peat-free. It is already pre-fertilized and provides essential nutrients for proper growth after planting. Plant the 'Dark Galaxy' deep in the ground, remove the bottom leaves and press lightly around the plant. Then water vigorously and support the tomato with a stick.

From June the tomato plants will start to grow properly and form side shoots and flowers. Pinching the tomatoes is now an important issue, because too many lateral shoots delay the ripening of the fruit and the plant often grows too densely. Therefore, the number of shoots in the 'Dark Galaxy' is reduced to two to three and all new side shoots are regularly removed. You should fertilize your tomatoes for the first time in early to mid-June. Especially for balcony tomatoes, but also for all other tomato plants, an organic liquid fertilizer facilitates the supply of nutrients. Our Plantura tomato and vegetable fertilizer is added to the irrigation water about once a week and is therefore very easy to apply. The nutrients are quickly absorbed and can therefore quickly provide relief even in the case of acute deficiency symptoms.

Harvesting and Using Dark Galaxy

The 'Dark Galaxy' can be eaten fresh because its pleasantly fresh and sweet taste makes it the ideal snack and salad tomato. The aroma also unfolds well when stuffed on the grill or in the oven, but the extraordinary color is of course best appreciated raw.

In summer our tomato plants are in full bloom and the first fruits are ripening. But soon afterwards the cold season arrives and in March it is time again to start thinking about growing the tomato plants. Perhaps this time the beautiful tomato variety 'Dark Galaxy' will also be at the start?
