The variety of colors and patterns of cob thread is great

We have put together a selection of the loveliest types and varieties to make it easier to decide on the right Chinese thread (Aglaonema). The shade-tolerant plant is available in numerous patterns and colors. Whether a Aglaomena in green, pink, red or spotted, there is something for everyone.

Aglaonema species: how many are there?

The plant genus Aglaonema belonging to the arum family includes 22 different species. They differ mainly in the occurrence, size and pattern of the leaves, whereby the varieties usually come in different colors. But the pattern can also vary with the varieties and be differently pronounced. The Aglaonema species listed here can all be kept as houseplants. Since the plants are native to Southeast Asia, a culture in the garden or on the balcony is not possible with us. In the trade mostly species-hybrids are offered, i.e. crossings of two different species.

An overview of the most beautiful Aglaonema species and varieties

Anyone who would like to keep a Chinese dandelion as a houseplant is faced with an unbelievable selection of different Aglaonema varieties and species. To make the decision a little easier, we briefly present the most beautiful variants here.

Tip: The nutrients in the substrate supplied with potted plants are often used up quickly, also because they are so often in rather small pots. Therefore, the common thread should be repotted in a high-quality substrate such as our Plantura organic universal soil as soon as possible after purchase. The loose, structurally stable soil is ideal for the Aglaonema and does not contain any peat for the sake of the environment.

Aglaonema pictum

Cobtail Aglaonema pictum occurs naturally on Sumatra and Borneoin front. There it grows on the ground as an upright shrub and forms decorative leaves that are 10 - 20 cm long. The dark green leaves have a light, greenish variegation.

Aglaomena pictum 'Tricolor' has a very special pattern
  • Aglaonema pictum 'Tricolor': This is probably the best-known variety of this species. Patches of silvery white and light green dot the dark green leaves, creating a camouflage-like camouflage pattern.
  • Aglaonema pictum 'Bicolor': As you might guess from the name, this cultivar looks similar to 'Tricolor' , where the pattern consists of only two colors.

Aglaonema commutatum

Native to the Philippines, Chinese dandelion Aglaonema commutatum is available in numerous varieties as a houseplant. In nature, the plant, which is up to 50 cm high, develops many green leaves with gray spots. This species needs a bit more light for bulb thread conditions, so it shouldn't be too far from the nearest window.

The red leaves with a green edge are typical of Aglaonema commutatum 'Red Star'
  • Aglaonema commutatum 'Red Zirkon': The leaves of this cultivar are green on the edge and have a pink mottled pattern in the center adorned.
  • Aglaonema commutatum 'Silver Bay': The green leaves of 'Silver Bay' are silver in the middle. Towards the outside, the silver runs into the green base color.
  • Aglaonema commutatum 'Maria': The cultivar 'Maria' has dark green leaves with a striped, silvery pattern. This variety does with slightly less light than the original species.
  • Aglaonema commutatum 'Albovariegata': In this variety the stems and trunk of the plant are colored white.
  • Aglaonema commutatum 'Red Star': The red leaves with the green edge make this variety a real eye-catcher.

Aglaonema crispum

The so-called marked cob thread is also known under the name Aglaonema roebelinii. It forms quite large leaves of about 30 cm in length and also becomes a large shrub in nature, over a meter tall. The leaves are light silvery and streaked with green patterns. This type is also suitable for particularly dark corners in the room.

  • Aglaonema crispum 'Deborah': The leaves of this variety are almost whitish light green, where the leaf veins are traced in a dark green.

Aglaonmea nitidum

Aglaonema nitidum grows quite slowly, but after a while it can reach heights of 90 cm. It occurs in Borneo, Sumatra and Burma.

The variety Aglaonema nitidum 'Ernesto's Favorite' is bicolored
  • Aglaonema nitidum 'Cortisii': This variety has green leaves with a silver border.
  • Aglaonema nitidum 'Super Green': Here the leaves have no markings at all, but are unicoloured, shiny green.
  • Aglaonema nitidum 'Ernesto's Favorite': The leaves of this cultivar are green with a broad silver stripe down the midrib.

Aglaonema costatum

This species is quite low-growing and forms many leaves that are close together. The leaves are green with a white midrib. The light requirement is rather low, so that the species is also suitable for somewhat darker areas in the room.

Aglaonema costatum can also have white speckles depending on the variety
  • Aglaonema costatum 'Foxii': This cultivar has dark green leaves with a light midrib and white speckles.

Aglaonema modestum

In contrast to the other species, Aglaonema modestum does not have patterned leaves, but is naturally solid green. A place with little light is absolutely sufficient for the glossy green leaves to develop magnificently. Too much light or even direct sunlight has a negative effect on leaf color.

Plain green species and varieties prefer it a little darker
  • Aglaonema modestum 'Spilt Milk': It is clear at first glance where this variety got its name from. With the large white spots on the green leaves, it looks like a glass of milk has been spilled on the plunger thread.

Like the Chinese vine, the scalloped plant can thrive in locations with less light. In our article we will show you how to plant and care for the bow tie.
