The hibiscus inspires with its intensely colored blossoms. Regular cutting promotes its growth and also enables special growth forms.

The sooner you cut back hibiscus, the longer it has to recover from the cut

The hibiscus (Hibiscus) comes from Asia, more precisely from China. All species known today also come from the Middle Kingdom. We will tell you how to cut your hibiscus correctly and how to achieve optimal flowering even in our moderate climate. The most important steps are briefly explained below.

Pruning hibiscus: when is the best time?

It doesn't matter whether it's garden hibiscus, rose mallow or giant hibiscus: the best time to cut is in late winter or early spring. Usually you choose a date between the beginning and middle of February to cut the hibiscus. At this point, the plants are at the beginning of the growth phase, so pruning will not rob them of their vigour. In addition, the right cut at the beginning of the vegetation can most effectively promote the formation of shoots and branching.

Early pruning encourages bud formation and branching

Cut the hibiscus correctly: How to do it

When cutting hibiscus, it depends on what kind of hibiscus it is. The rose hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis), which is mostly kept as a houseplant, is regularly pruned for training purposes. After the hibiscus has faded, cut the shoots in half to achieve higher branching. The more branched the rose hibiscus is, the more lush the blossom will be.

In the case of perennial hibiscus, also known as giant hibiscus, only one care cut is made. For this purpose, the side shoots are shortened by half so that they branch out better. Furthermore, a grooming cut is also useful for shaping purposes. In addition, the side shoots that shoot out close to the ground are often removed so that the perennial does not become too sprawling.

Weak and injured shoots are radically cut off

The garden hibiscus (Hibiscus syriacus) can be grown in several waysget cut. First, a maintenance pruning is done in spring to encourage branching and maintain the shape of the crown. All other cuts are used for shaping. You can find out how this works and what you need to be aware of in the next section.

Pruning hibiscus as standard or small stems

There are different ways of pruning to determine the shape of the hibiscus. The garden hibiscus is often cut as a high stem, or also called a stem. With this shaping cut, all side shoots along the main shoot are removed except for the top three to four. The standard cut requires a lot of patience, because this process often has to be repeated several years in a row until the hibiscus has reached the desired growth height.

Now you start to shorten the side shoots of the crown so that they branch out again. The top shoot of the crown is cut off about half its length and tied to the top with a thin wire as a stem extension. This process is repeated until a well-formed crown has formed. Incidentally, the shoots along the stem have to be removed again and again.

Fertilizing is also an important care measure for hibiscus that should not be neglected. We have put together everything you need to know about fertilizing hibiscus so that your plant can show off its full blooms.
