Every year on the first Saturday in May is Naked Gardening Day. We reveal where this tradition came from and how the day is celebrated by home gardeners around the world.
It sounds pretty funny that there is an official Naked Gardening Day. Since 2005, nude gardening has been celebrated on the first Saturday in May. The day was probably founded by a nudist movement from the USA, who wanted to promote and celebrate the acceptance of the naked human body. What better place to celebrate the natural, naked body than your own garden?
But of course this annual event should also be understood with a certain wink. According to the founders of WNGD (World Naked Gardening Day), the first Saturday in May should be fun, light-hearted and in no way politically motivated - and should be understood as such. Precisely because the day doesn't take itself too seriously, garden enthusiasts all over the world are now celebrating the WNGD. Many also share photos on social media of what naked gardening looks like on them. But fear not: most gardeners have found fun ways to cover the most intimate parts of their bodies after all.
Adam and Eve could even be seen as biblical pioneers of the World Naked Gardening Day, who after all also walked around the Garden of Eden naked (at least up to the point when they tasted the apple of the tree of knowledge).
Anyone who has now acquired a taste and would also like to celebrate this year's World Naked Gardening Day should consider the following tips:
- Keep away from roses or other thorny plants
- Do not repot cacti
- Apply sunscreen to sensitive areas (those that don't see the sun that often)
- Warn young family members in particular
- Stay in your own garden and don't go naked to the nearest botanical garden
