Cutting sunflowers for the vase
If you pay a little attention to the needs of the sunny plants when pruning, the flowers in the vase will delight you for up to two weeks. Already when choosing the time of cutting, you can influence the later shelf life in the vase. The best time to cut is early morning on a dry day. Choose a flower that has just started to open. Flowers that are already fully open will not last long in the vase. Cut the stem of the sunflower at the desired height. However, only use clean and sharp tools for the cut. Then remove the lower leaves. The vase with the freshly cut flower is then best placed in a place that is protected from drafts and direct sunlight.
Cut sunflowers correctly
With a bit of skill when cutting, you can enjoy the sun children in the vase a little longer. Because a skillful cut not only improves the absorption of water and nutrients, but also reduces the risk of rotting. Using sharp scissors, cut the stem diagonally at the bottom and about two centimeters. This increases the cutting surface and allows better absorption of water and oxygen. For maximum durability in the vase, the vertical cutting is then repeated every two days.
Put sunflowers in hot water
You often hear that you should dip the stems in hot water before they serve their decorative purpose in the vase. This is to prevent the development of rot by sclerosing and thus closing the cut surface. However, opinions differ on this tip. Researchers from Geisenheim have even discovered that the hot bath shortens the lifespan of flowers. We recommend you try both and make your own judgement. However, it is important that the stems are really only held in the hot water for a few seconds.
Sunflowers in the vase: change the water
Change the water in the vase daily. This means that there are no unpleasant odors even without fresh flowers. When changing the water, always use lukewarm water - sun worshipers don't like cold water at all.
