The Peter Pepper is definitely an eye-catcher, as it is reminiscent of a certain part of the male body. Introducing the Curious Penis Chili.

The 'Peter Pepper' variety forms unique fruits among the chillies

The peculiar-looking variety 'Peter Pepper' (Capsicum annuum), also called penis chili, probably originally comes from Central America. It is now grown in the southern United States, mainly in Louisiana and Texas, and in Mexico. It is not known exactly why the interesting form emerged or whether a breeder with a great sense of humor selected it. However, the phallic-looking chili is definitely a topic of conversation.

The ripe fruit, which can be admired in yellow, orange and red, is a real eye-catcher. The wrinkled-looking, often slightly curved pod has a slight indentation at the end of the fruit, which reinforces the image of the man's best piece. The length of the penis chilli is about 5 to 15 cm and about 1.5 cm in width. However, the fruit shape is quite variable and often differs on the same plant. So there is not always a real gem on the bush.

The heat of Peter Pepper

On the hotness scale, Peter Pepper achieves “only” an average place, at least as far as the Scoville value is concerned. On average, values of around 25,000 Scoville are measured, which corresponds to a degree of sharpness of 4 to 5 on a scale of 1 to 10. With the right care, however, this can rise to 80,000 Scoville and heat up the connoisseur properly. Tips and tricks on how to get more heat out of your Peter Pepper can be found here.

Growing Penis Chili

The Peter Pepper is offered either as seed or directly as a young plant in spring. However, since it is quite rare, you probably have better chances on local young plant markets, exchange markets or in specialized online shops than in conventional nurseries and garden centers. The sowing of the chili begins - as usual with theheat-loving nightshades - from mid-February. In some potting soil, the seeds germinate after about 10 to 14 days with plenty of moisture and warmth. When the first real leaves appear, the chillies can be pricked. From mid-May, plant the young plant outdoors, either directly in the bed or in a bucket with a capacity of at least 10 litres. Detailed instructions for planting chillies can be found here.

Plant the ‘Peter Pepper’ outdoors from mid-May

The plant reaches a height of about 70 to 90 cm and forms a spreading crown. With some organic slow-release fertilizer like our Plantura Organic Tomato Fertilizer, it produces a good harvest and lots of fun shaped fruits. About 60 days after flowering, the penis chili is then ready for harvest. It is particularly suitable for the preparation of sauces or dried and chopped up as a savory seasoning. But you can still admire the wonderful chillies preserved in vinegar or oil all year round. The Peter Pepper is a seed resistant variety and can therefore be grown again from your own seeds. To do this, the pods are cut open lengthways, the seeds removed and then gently dried. Incidentally, a self-grown penis chili is also an excellent individual gift.

Tip: In addition to the 'Peter Pepper' there are many other delicious chilli Sorts. You can now easily grow five of them yourself. As? With the Plantura Chili Cultivation Kit.
