Hanging succulents are a real eye-catcher

Money Tree (Crassula ovata), Houseleek (Sempervivum) or Aloe Vera (Aloe vera ) probably everyone knows. And that's no wonder, after all, thanks to their incredibly robust nature, succulents are among the most popular indoor plants of all. But did you know that there are also great hanging succulents? The hanging succulents are now considered a real insider tip among plant lovers, because they combine a high level of undemanding with an extravagant appearance, so that they soon attract everyone's attention. We have put together tips for you on how to stage succulents hanging in the apartment and what you should consider.

Hanging Succulent Species

If you want to upgrade your home with the help of succulents, you first have to ask yourself which plant is the right one. In fact, there is a whole range of hanging succulent species that are perfect for the home. A great eye-catcher is the Calico Kitten (Crassula pellucida subsp. marginalis 'Variegata'), which sets magical accents with its heart-shaped, brightly colored leaves . But also the string pea (Senecio rowleyanus), the Ruby Necklace (Othonna capensis) or the sedum plant (Sedum morganianum) are attractive hanging succulents. Because of its heart-shaped leaves, the candlestick flower (Ceropegia linearis) is also extremely decorative and is often used as a houseplant.

Hanging Succulent Planters

Anyone who owns such a feast for the eyes as a hanging succulent naturally wants to display it stylishly in their home. Hanging succulents look particularly good in tall plant pots, from which their leaves and tendrils can flow downwards. The extravagant beauties come into their own even better when they are displayed hanging: the long shoots and the striking foliage of the plants come into their own in a hanging basket. is well suitedFor example, a self-made macrame hanging basket that can be individually adapted to the pot and plant. Succulents look modern and at the same time timeless when they are hung in glass balls. However, they look particularly extravagant when combined with a Kokedama - the apparently floating moss balls look almost magical in combination with the hanging shoots of the succulents.

The right soil for succulents

If you want to keep your succulents for a long time, you should pay particular attention to choosing the right soil. In fact, choosing the right soil is essential for the maintenance and he alth of the plants, as they can only show their robust nature in the right substrate. Good drainage ability is particularly essential for the right soil for succulents, because although they can deal well with drought, they do not tolerate waterlogging. Since the substrate should dry completely between watering the succulents, good wettability is also important after drying out. In addition, the right substrate should have a loose but dimensionally stable structure and be adapted to the nutrient requirements of the plants. Unfortunately, normal potting soil does not meet these requirements. Instead, you should use cactus or succulent soil for your hanging succulents, which are specially adapted to the needs of exotic plants. The Floragard cactus soil, for example, has proven itself and also provides succulents with ideal nutrients.

Planting Succulents in a Hanging Planter: Instructions

Succulents in a hanging vessel make a completely different impression than in a normal flower pot - luckily, when it comes to planting, both variants hardly differ. If possible, you should use a cachepot with an inner pot with drainage holes as a planter, as this reduces the risk of waterlogging. If this is not possible, for example when planting succulents in hanging glass balls, you should attach particular importance to a sufficiently thick drainage layer. Otherwise, the procedure is the same for both types of pots: First, the pot is filled with potting clay to about a quarter of the desired planting height - this is the drainage layer. This is followed by a layer of cactus or succulent soil. Now you can carefully free the succulents from their old pot - depending on the type of succulent, it is advisable to wear thorn-proof glovesto attract. Once the succulent has been removed from the pot, the loose soil on the fine roots can be carefully removed with your fingers. Then the hanging succulent is placed in the new container and this is filled with more cactus soil, which is lightly pressed with your fingers. Care must be taken to ensure that none of the long shoots are accidentally buried as well, as this can lead to rot in these areas.

Here is an overview of all the steps again:

  1. Fill about a quarter of the planting layer as a drainage layer of planting clay
  2. Fill the container with cactus or succulent soil
  3. Remove the succulent carefully from the old pot and remove the old soil
  4. Put succulents in a new container and fill up with cactus soil
  5. Press the earth carefully
The right soil is the be-all and end-all for succulents

Caring for hanging succulents

Even if succulents are generally considered to be very robust, repotting is quite stressful for them too. For this reason, you should pay them a little more attention, especially in the first week after the move. The succulent can only be watered after a week so as not to put even more strain on the already stressed roots. In addition, the succulent should not be exposed directly to the sun for the first week, but should only be accustomed to it slowly to avoid sunburn. Hanging succulents in glass spheres should generally not be exposed to direct sunlight - the curved surface can cause a magnifying glass effect and lead to severe burns. Otherwise, hanging succulents require the same care as other succulents. You can find detailed information on the topic of caring for succulents in our special article.

Another unusual decoration idea is planting succulents in the picture frame. We will show you how to do this and which types are suitable.
