Origin and History of the 'Primabella'

The breeder of the 'Primabella' is Dr. Bernd Horneburg, who works as a scientist in plant breeding at the University of Göttingen. Together with his team, the first open source tomato, the 'Sunviva', was created in 2022. In a large project to breed outdoor tomatoes, the ‘Primabella’ was probably also selected. It is currently the most resistant tomato variety to the dreaded tomato late blight (Phytophthora infestans). The variety is propagated by Culinaris, a seed company for ecologically certified seed in Göttingen.

Planting and caring for primabella tomatoes: Our tips

The primabella tomato was specially bred to be grown outdoors. She can produce high yields outdoors without a rain cover while remaining he althy. Young plants of this variety can be planted outdoors from mid-May. Our Plantura organic tomato soil can also be used in the bed. With its high content of organic matter and compost, difficult and nutrient-poor soils can be improved over the long term. Soil life also benefits from this and so indirectly your tomato plants. The nutrients already contained provide the 'Primabella' with everything it needs until the first fertilization. The vigorous cocktail tomato should be watered sufficiently after planting, well supported and tied.

Small-fruited cocktail tomatoes can be grown with several shoots, depending on the space available. For this you leave up to four side shoots at the bottom of the trunk and remove all those sitting above. The tomato pinching must be repeated regularly so that the 'Primabella' remains airy, dries quickly and all the fruits get enough sunlight. The first fertilization takes place from June. A primarily organic long-term fertilizer, such as our Plantura organic tomato fertilizer, is slowly decomposed by soil organisms. The nutrients released as a result can be quickly absorbed by the roots. Over a period of two months, the 'Primabella' feeds on a single dose of fertilizer. Fertilize once in August with a lower dose. Especially outdoors, the soil and tomato plants benefit from a vegetable mulch layer. We have summarized what you should consider when watering and mulching tomatoes in a special article.

Harvesting and Using 'Primabella'
