Origin and history of the apple

As its name suggests, the 'Öhringer Blutstreifling' comes from the Öhringen area, a town in Baden-Württemberg. The variety probably originated there around 1860 as a chance seedling, it was first described in 1907 by F. Lucas. Until 1929 the mother tree could still be admired in Öhringen. Especially in the 1930s to the 1960s, the 'Öhringer Blutsstreifling' was a very popular apple variety in Baden-Württemberg and Switzerland. In the meantime, the old apple variety 'Öhringer Blutstreifling' has become rarer, but there are still numerous lovers who offer the apple a home. In 2022, the variety even received the title "Orchard of the Year" from the regional associationfor fruit growing, garden and landscape Baden-Württemberg.

'Öhringer Blutstreifling': taste and characteristics

At first glance, the 'Öhringer Blutstreifling' looks very ordinary: the small to medium-sized fruits weigh about 100 to 120 grams and are irregular, mostly broadly ovate or spherically flattened. The largely smooth, waxy skin of the apple is initially light green, but turns sunny yellow as it ripens. The bright to dark red stripes on the fruit are particularly characteristic of the variety. These stand out clearly on the sunny side in particular and are responsible for the unusual name 'Öhringer Blutstreifling'. However, the true potential of the 'Öhringer Blutstreifling' lies inside: the white flesh of the apple is particularly juicy and pleasantly firm. In terms of taste, the 'Öhringer Blutstreifling' is characterized in particular by its sweet note, which is due to the low acidity and high sugar content.

Cultivation features

The 'Öhringer Blutstreifling' not only scores with its apples, but also in cultivation: It shows strong growth, especially when it is young, but this weakens significantly over time. The 'Öhringer Blutstreifling' presents itself as a tree with an attractive, high-domed crown and sparsely branched, overhanging fruit branches. In order to support the branching and crown structure of the 'Öhringer Blutstreifling', it is worth paying attention to a strong training pruning. In this way, balding can be avoided. The old apple variety is mainly cultivated as a standard or half-stem either on its own root or on vigorously growing rootstocks such as MM106 or A2.

The 'Öhringer Blutstreifling' impresses with yield and taste

A special feature of the 'Öhringer Blutstreifling' is its flowering, which starts mid-early and lasts longer than average. A wide variety of varieties can be considered as suitable pollinators, including the 'Cox Orange', 'Idared' or the 'White Clear Apple'. The 'Öhringer Blutstreifling' is also a good pollinator for other varieties.

The 'Öhringer Blutstreifling' is known for being able to cope with rougher site conditions - of course depending on the rootstock used. For example, it is suitable for altitudes of up to 600 meters. Otherwise, the 'Öhringer Blutstreifling' has no special requirements for its place of cultivation. However, the old apple variety has one disadvantage: the variety is considered to be susceptible toApple scab, so growing in gardens that have had a history of scab is not recommended. Fruit tree canker is also common in 'Öhringer Blutstreifling'.

One positive characteristic of the 'Öhringer Blutstreifling' is definitely its reliable, high yield, which starts early and also very regularly afterwards.

Harvest time and use of the winter apple 'Öhringer Blutstreifling'

The ripeness of the apples usually begins in October. However, those who cannot use the high yield immediately need not worry: if the apples are stored correctly, they can be used until April without any problems. Because of its subtle sweetness, the 'Öhringer Blutstreifling' is often served as table fruit, but it is also ideal for jams, for baking or cooking. The variety also proves to be an excellent cider apple. Due to its lack of acidity, however, it is usually only used in conjunction with other, more acidic apple varieties for juice production.

The 'Öhringer Blutstreifling' is not the right apple variety for you yet? The apple varieties 'Reglindis' and 'Liberty' are not only tasty, but also very resistant to apple tree diseases.
