Potted basil is now available on every corner. Here you can find out how the sensitive protégé can last longer on your windowsill.

Basil from the supermarket can be restored to its former glory

Everyone has probably had the experience of the recently bought potted basil losing its leaves. You can no longer count on the reproduction of fresh, new leaves. Instead of captivating with growth and new, aromatic leaves, the basil attracts attention with its amazingly quick farewell to the afterlife. That's no coincidence: the potted herbs are produced within a very short time.

In summer it takes just 40 days for basil to find its way from the seed bag to the store shelves. However, the rapid growth does not make the plants particularly robust. The plants are rather vulnerable due to the unfamiliar conditions during the stressful transport and then in the new home.

In winter, the transport can be life-threatening for the basil due to the low temperatures. Temperatures below 10 °C should be avoided in any case. In addition, the basil shoots in the pot are always much too dense. Here you can accommodate the stressed plant and provide a remedy: If the plant is immediately divided into four parts and these are potted in individual pots with fresh substrate, the basil will be happy about a significantly improved and more pleasant climate.

The plants should then be placed in a bright place and watered well. The first fertilization of the basil should not be long in coming in order to be able to enjoy vigorous and robust basil.
