Yucca palms can be found in almost every apartment. But is the yucca palm poisonous to humans and animals, or is it harmless? We have the answer.

The yucca palm is a popular ornamental plant for the home. Several species of the genus Yucca can even be overwintered outdoors. When it comes to how toxic the palm-like plant is to humans and animals, there is often disagreement. We explain everything about the toxicity of the yucca below.
Yucca palm: Toxic to humans?
Yucca palms form so-called saponins in their leaves and trunk, which are secondary plant substances. The substance can also be observed in many other plant species and, according to scientific knowledge, is mainly used to ward off predators and fungi. It is not easy to answer whether the yucca palm is already poisonous to humans. Basically, it is advisable to be careful when handling the agave plant. This is all the more true for small children and babies, who generally tolerate fewer toxins such as saponins. Children should therefore always be protected from handling the plant. A direct and immediate danger for children is the sharp-edged leaves of the yucca palm, which can quickly lead to injuries.

Yucca Palm: Toxic to Cats, Dogs and Other Pets?
Basically, the same rules apply to dogs and cats as to children when it comes to the yucca palm. Consuming the plant can lead to symptoms of poisoning, which manifest themselves in stomach or digestive diseases. The sharp-edged leaves can also cause injuries to pets. Nevertheless, it is rather the exception that animals tamper with the slightly poisonous plant. The plant does not necessarily have to be removed - be vigilant anyway. Especially with cats, you should keep an eye on whether the trunk of the yucca is being used by them as a scratching post.

When handling the yucca palm, keep the following in mind:
- Contains saponins
- Can cause digestive up to kidney problems if eaten
- Risk of injury from sharp-edged leaves
- Beware of small children and pets
