Cyclamen are particularly sensitive to watering as houseplants. We show you how to water the sensitive cyclamen correctly.

Cyclamen (Cyclamen) usually bloom in beautiful shades of violet and pink, which, depending on the species, sweeten the winter or bring variety to summer and autumn. The delicate little plants decorate the bed as well as the windowsill. Unfortunately, watering the popular tuberous plants should be treated with caution. It should be neither too much nor too little cool water, otherwise the perennial plants will quickly become ill. We will show you the necessary steps to ensure that you have some of the flowering primrose plants (Primulaceae) with the delicate flowers for a long time.
Water the cyclamen how often?
How often a cyclamen is watered ultimately depends on many factors. However, it should be watered before the tuber is completely dry. It is best to water as soon as the top layer of soil has dried out. In general, when watering cyclamen:
- Pot: All Seasons
- Beet: After a long dry period & in summer heat (evenings or mornings)

Basically, it can be said that most plants are watered during flowering. In addition, there is less watering in winter than in summer. Cyclamen in the bed may also need to be watered after rainfall. Check if the ground underneath the leaves has gotten wet after a rainfall. The large leaves often prevent the vital liquid from penetrating to the roots.
How to water cyclamen correctly?
Waterlogging is not tolerated well by cyclamen. They then tend very quickly to blight or other diseases and ultimately die. Therefore, the right watering tactic is particularly important for potted cyclamen. There are two variants. On the one hand, the plants can be watered with the immersion method:
- Fill bucket with water
- Dip the pot of cyclamen into the bucket
- Submerge only enough so that the tuber is not at the topgets wet
- Wait until no more air bubbles appear
- Drain the pot
Or water your cyclamen from below:
- Fill the coaster with water
- Drain off remaining water after 30 minutes
Your potted plant should give you many years of pleasure. With cyclamen in the bed, care should be taken (as with potted plants) to ensure that the leaves and flowers do not get wet when watering. Consequently, cyclamen are never sprayed with a water spray.
Water cyclamen properly and avoid yellow leaves
If your alpine plants develop yellow leaves, this is rarely because the plants are really sick. In most cases the casting is wrong. Yellow leaves can indicate both too much and too little water. But it can also be because the plants are too cold or too warm. You can find out more about the ideal location for cyclamen here.
