1. Hornbeams

The hornbeam is actually a swindler - it is not a beech at all but a birch family and therefore much more robust and undemanding than its namesake. So it can thrive in both sun and shade and even tolerates temporary drought and waterlogging. The green hedge grows up to four meters high and can be cut up to twice a year to keep it in shape. But the beech also tolerates a pruning well, although it then looks a bit wilder thanks to its strong growth.
