Ivy
An ivy hedge is not only the perfect privacy screen, it also creates a fairytale flair in your own garden

The neighbor interrupted you again just as you were making yourself comfortable on the terrace and were about to open the most exciting part of your favorite book? Are the cars speeding past your garden fence with increasing noise? Then it is probably high time for a dense hedge that blocks looks, noise and pollutants. Let yourself be surprised what the ivy (Hedera helix) has to offer.

Who wouldn't like a cheap hedge that quickly grows dense and tall and doesn't take up much space. Of course, it should also be easy to care for. A hedge of ivy combines all these qualities. Ivy grows quickly, is uncomplicated and, on top of that, evergreen. The special thing about an ivy hedge is that it can be very narrow, depending on the trellis chosen. As a bonus, there is also the air-purifying effect. Ivy filters toxic pollutants such as benzene, formaldehyde, xylene and toluene from the air.

Planting ivy as a hedge

Ivy is a climber. Therefore, the planting is done a little differently than with a conventional hedge. The main difference is that ivy does not support itself, but needs a trellis. You can get creative when choosing a trellis: Whether it's a wire or metal trellis, a simple wooden fence or even a network of sturdy rope - ivy gratefully accepts everything in order to climb up it. If the individual trellises are close enough together, a dense privacy screen develops within a year or two.

So first set up a suitable climbing aid before planting the little plants next to it. You can carefully braid the shoots so that the plants notice the climbing aid immediately. Water well and the hedge is already planted. You can find out exactly how to proceed when planting ivy here.

Care for an ivy hedge: You should pay attention to this

Maintaining an ivy hedge is fairly easy. At the beginning after planting, you should water the seedlings regularly to speed up rooting. Once established, however, the plantlets are quite robust. In order to optimally supply the plant with nutrients, you can apply a long-term fertilizer such as our Plantura organic universal fertilizer once a year. Also, the plant benefits from an annual pruning to keep it in shape. Find out more about pruning ivy here.
