The carnivorous Venus Flytrap isn't just special in its diet. When it comes to casting, it also has special requirements that need to be met.

The Venus Flytrap (Dionaea muscipula) is an exotic potted plant. It is therefore not surprising that she has some special requirements when it comes to her care. This is also the case when it comes to casting. We explain why the Venus flytrap does not tolerate hard tap water and which water you should use instead.
Venus flytrap how to water?
The Venus flytrap originates from natural conditions in the open field, where it takes root in permanently moist terrain. These conditions should also be simulated in the pot as well as possible. Regular watering keeps the plant substrate permanently moist. Make sure that you pour the water directly onto the plant substrate and not flat over the opened snap traps. The remaining water can lead to rotting of the catch leaves and would severely affect your darling.

Note: Waterlogging is poison for many potted plants. The Venus flytrap, on the other hand, can tolerate waterlogging and does very well with it over a period of time. If you happen to mean too well when watering, don't worry - the backed-up water increases the humidity and makes the flytrap more vital.
Venus Flytrap how often to water?
Since you should keep the plant substrate constantly moist, it is advisable to water it daily if the temperature conditions require it. Depending on the degree of evaporation, watering every two to three days may be sufficient. If you don't want to check the water level in the flytrap every day, a trivet, in which there is always some water left after the penetrating watering, has proven to be a work-saving measure.

Pouring the Venus Flytrap: The right thingWater
Venus fly traps require low-lime water. It has proven itself to use collected and filtered rainwater, as this is low in ions due to the previous evaporation process. Another option is to use distilled water mixed with 10% tap water. The addition of tap water is very important, since distilled water has the property of withdrawing water from the plant cells due to its low ion concentration.

Watering the Venus Flytrap in Winter
In winter, the Venus flytrap goes into a kind of hibernation. During this time you should move them to suitable winter quarters (optimal temperature between 5 - 10 °C, but still with light). The watering rhythm and watering quantity must also be adjusted: keep the substrate slightly moist without waterlogging. Otherwise, the lower temperatures in the winter quarters could quickly lead to putrefaction processes that would damage your Venus flytrap.
