Drying rose petals is probably the simplest method of preservation

Roses (Rosa) unfortunately only delight us in the garden with their beautiful blossoms for a few months. However, if you would like to keep your bridal bouquet or a cut rose as a gift, there are various ways of preserving the flowers. Air drying is probably the simplest and most well-known method, but it does not always lead to the desired result - after all, you want the roses to look as fresh as possible even after a long time. In this article, we explain how you can easily preserve roses with the help of silica gel or glycerin.

In addition to the common methods of preserving roses - such as drying and candying - we also present the preservation with silica gel and glycerin below.

Preserving Roses by Drying

The best-known method of preserving cut roses is air drying. To do this, the rose is hung upside down in a dry, airy room out of direct sunlight to dry and later sealed with hairspray. This usually works very well, but the buds become very pale and brittle after drying.

Fragrant petals of a rose bush - such as those of the Damask rose (Rosa × damascena) - are also wonderful for dry the production of your own tea blends. You can also use it to fill scented sachets or simply make your own aromatic rose s alt. Rose lovers will certainly be happy about such souvenirs.

Preserving Roses with Silica

A special form of preserving flowers is that with silica granules, which is better known to many as silica gel or silica gel. This is often found in small bags in newly purchased shoes or bags. But you can also use it in larger quantitiesa craft store or online.

Fill a container with enough granules and put the rose in it for a few days. The silica gel gently removes the moisture from the parts of the plant and ensures that the color of the flowers is preserved very well. In order to be able to reuse the silica gel, you should slowly dry it in the oven at a maximum of 80 °C. By the way, you can also achieve a similar effect of removing moisture with s alt or detergent.

Preserving roses with glycerin

Preservation with glycerine is suitable for long-term preservation of an entire bouquet of flowers. The sugar alcohol is available in liquid form in the pharmacy. Put the glycerin in a vase with twice the amount of water and mix well. Then cut the stems of the rose at an angle and place them in the vase with the glycerin solution for about a day or two. When small droplets can be seen on the petals, the rose has become soaked with glycerin and the preservation is complete. You can then air dry the bouquet upside down. From now on, however, the rose should no longer come into contact with water.

Preserving rose petals by candying

Candied rose petals are not only beautiful to look at, but also taste really special. If the flowers are intended for consumption, the roses should of course not have been treated with pesticides beforehand. After harvesting, the individual petals are dipped in sugar syrup. To do this, boil a cup of water with a cup of sugar. Then let the syrup cool down to around 60°C before you dip the flowers in it. Then lay the flowers out on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper to dry.

In another method, the flowers are brushed with egg white, dipped in sugar and dried in the oven at around 40 °C for about two hours. The shelf life of the candied flowers depends on the moisture content. Buds brushed with egg white should be used within a few days - those that have been dipped in sugar syrup tend to have a much longer shelf life.

Tip from the professional: Perhaps you have also heard of wax roses? Here, the flower heads of the roses are dipped in hot, colorless wax and then cooled in ice water.
