Indian bananas (Asimina triloba), also called pawpaw, are still rather unknown to us, but are becoming more and more popular. The exotic plant is hardy, bears beautiful flowers and golden foliage in autumn and the fruits taste particularly exotic. So many reasons to grow Indian bananas in your own garden. We'll tell you what to look out for when buying Indian bananas and where you can get your pawpaw from.
The Indian banana originally comes from North America and was already valued by the Indians there as a nutritious and exotic-tasting fruit. It is one of the very few tropical fruits that you can also grow outdoors in our country. With its unique taste reminiscent of mango, pineapple, passion fruit and vanilla, it is something very special and an asset to any garden. However, the own propagation of Indian bananas is very demanding. It therefore makes perfect sense to leave the sowing to the professionals and buy a Indian banana plant.
Buying an Indian banana: What to look out for
Before you buy your Indian banana, you should ask yourself the following questions:
- How big should the plant I buy be?
- Do I want to grow my pawpaw outdoors or in a pot?
- How much money do I want to spend on my Indian banana?

The size of the Indian banana plays a crucial role in the purchase and influences all of these questions. Smaller Indian banana plants are significantly cheaper, are very well suited for cultivation in pots and can decorate the balcony or terrace, for example. If you want to cultivate your pawpaw outdoors, things are a little different. Although Indian bananas are very hardy when fully grown - they can withstand minus temperatures down to -30 °C - this does not apply to young onesplants too. It is therefore advisable not to plant Indian bananas outdoors until they are sufficiently large and have developed a pronounced root ball.
Indian bananas in 3 liter containers are usually too small for the field and should be cultivated in pots for another two years before they are planted out. Pawpaws in 6 liter containers, on the other hand, are ready for planting outdoors. However, large Indian bananas also cost many times more than smaller specimens.
Tip: Use a suitable soil for potted Indian bananas, such as our peat-free Plantura organic universal soil.
The state of he alth of the plant is also important when buying. Before buying, be sure to examine them for signs of pests and diseases. The root ball should also make a he althy and undamaged impression. This is the only way for your Indian banana to have the best conditions to grow well with you.
