We explain everything important about the properties and varieties of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) and show the benefits of tall fescue -Having seeds in the lawn.

Tall fescue is a particularly robust lawn grass that tolerates drought well

Many plants are true survivors, but tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) takes the discipline of resilience to the extreme. Hardly any adversity in its environment can stop its growth. In the following you will learn everything about the great strengths and small weaknesses of the special lawn grass and how you can make use of tall fescue seeds in dry grass, for example.

Festuca arundinacea: origin and description

The tall fescue has a wide location tolerance, which is also clearly reflected in its natural distribution: North Africa and Europe, as far as north-west China and the Himalayas, call the grass its home. It also belongs to Lolium perenne, Poa pratensis, Poa trivialis or its relative Festuca rubra to the grass family (Poaceae). It is perennial, so it grows again every year and over a long period of time. It mainly forms clumps as well as short rhizomes in order to spread. The leaves of tall fescue are very broad and coarse compared to those of other grasses. Its roots go exceptionally deep into the ground. Because Festuca arundinacea can live just as well with moisture and waterlogging as with drought and heat, it inhabits wet meadows, embankments, roadsides and meadows. It grows on both slightly acidic and slightly alkaline soils and does not disdain sandy or loamy subsoil.

Tip: The great hardiness and adaptability of Festuca arundinacea can be used when a lawn is laid out in a dry location target. Tall fescue is also included in the Plantura dry lawn mixture, which protects the lawn against heat and drying out in summer.

Characteristics and uses of tall fescue

For a quick overview, we have summarized everything you need to know about Festuca arundinacea:

The tall fescue inShortness

If tall fescue is to assert itself, it must be sown with a high seed density

Tip: Although the tall fescue has a number of advantages, it also has two disadvantages: It has rather coarse, broad leaves, which give a lawn a somewhat uneven, rough appearance. In addition, it has difficulty asserting itself against other lawn grasses. In our premium quality Plantura Dry Grass we use the Festuca arundinacea cultivar ‘Debussy 1’, a beautiful, dark green variety of tall fescue that forms a dense sward. We compensate for the low competitiveness with a high seed density: 70% of our mixture consists of tall fescue seeds. We also pay attention to a good combination with proven suitable mixing partners such as Poa pratensis.

Different varieties of Festuca arundinacea

The tall fescue, despite its already good natural properties, was further developed by human handsimproved. The aim of breeding tall fescue has always been to maintain a high level of tolerance towards the environment while at the same time increasing its competitiveness against other lawn grasses and weeds and improving its appearance.

A good example of successful breeding is the variety 'Debussy 1', which is why we use grass seed of this tall fescue in our Plantura dry grassland.

Festuca arundinacea 'Barcesar':
Rather fast growing; only faintly green in winter; fine leaf (compared to other varieties of the species); good scar density; good competitiveness against weeds; durable; high resistance to many lawn diseases; equally suitable for playing and sports lawns, hard-wearing lawns and house lawns in dry locations.

Festuca arundinacea 'SC1':
Medium to fast growth; still sufficiently green even in winter; fine leaf (compared to other varieties of the species); nice dense scar; sufficient competitiveness against weeds; quite high durability; high resistance to many lawn diseases; good suitability for sports turf, playing and sports turf as well as domestic turf in dry locations and hard-wearing turf.

Some varieties of tall fescue tend to have broader leaves

Festuca arundinacea ′Debussy 1′:
Medium fast growth; still green even in winter; coarse sheet; nice dense turf and good competition from weeds; good durability; Resistance to the most important lawn diseases, suitable for functional lawns, sports and play lawns and hard-wearing lawns. Because of its good properties, this variety is used in our Plantura Premium dry grassland.

Festuca arundinacea 'Divyna':
Fast growing; only faintly green in winter; extremely coarse leaf; sufficiently good turf density and competitiveness against weeds; not very durable; resistant to all major lawn diseases; Equally suitable for domestic lawns in dry locations, hard-wearing lawns, sports lawns and play and sports lawns.

Festuca arundinacea 'Eyecandy':
Fast growth; only faintly green in winter; extremely coarse leaf; good turf density and competitiveness against weeds; less durable; adequate resistance to all lawn diseases; moderately suitable for sports lawns, house lawns in dry locations as well as playgrounds andSports turf.
