Origin and history of the tomato
The golden yellow cherry tomato 'Sungold' is a hybrid variety from Tokia Seed Company in Japan. It was launched in 1992 and was available in the UK later that year from seed stores Thompson and Morgan as the 'Sweetest Tomato Ever'. Since then, the disease-resistant hybrid has enjoyed great popularity in England and other countries. The yellow 'Sungold F1' was followed by a red variant marketed under the name 'Sungold Select Red'.
Description and taste of the Sungold tomato variety
'Sungold F1' is a vigorous tomato variety that grows to a height of around 200 centimetres. The fruits hang in panicles on the plant, are round and weigh around 15 grams. The harvest begins very early in July and lasts until the end of the season in October. The taste of the numerous golden-yellow cherry tomatoes can be described as very sweet with a slight acidity and aromas of citrus and grapes. 'Sungold F1' has inbred resistance to Tomato Mosaic Virus (TMV), Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl Virus (TYLCV) and Fusarium wilt. As an F1 hybrid, the yellow tomato variety is not seed-firm and can therefore not be propagated from its own seeds. If you want to grow the 'Sungold F1' in the long term, you have to buy new tomato seeds regularly.

Planting and caring for Sungold: This is important to note
The young plants of 'Sungold F1' can be kept universally in pots, outdoors or in a greenhouse. However, since it has no resistance to late blight and late blight, it is advisable to grow tomatoes outdoors under a protective rain canopy. At the beginning of May, put the tomato plants in the greenhouse, from mid-May after the ice saints in pots and outdoors. The planters should be filled with a potting soil adapted to tomatoes - such as our Plantura organic tomato soil. This is pre-fertilized, so it already contains essential nutrients that support the young plants in growing and provide them with nutrients until the first fertilization in June. After planting, you should support and water the 'Sungold F1' well.
High-yielding cherry tomatoes like the 'Sungold F1' can be grown with multiple shoots. You can leave three to four side shoots that are deep on the stem when pinching out the tomatoes. The plant becomes bushy and has to be tied up and supported better, but at the same time it also bears its sugar-sweet fruits on the side shoots. Fruit formation begins in June, which is the ideal time for the first fertilization. We recommend using a purely organic liquid fertilizer, especially for fertilizing balcony tomatoes, such as our Plantura tomato and vegetable fertilizer. Applying the nutrients is very easy: about once a week, mix 15 to 25 ml of the fertilizer with 5 liters of irrigation water and then water as normal. Of course, the liquid fertilizer can also be used outdoors and in greenhouses.
Harvesting and Using Sungold Tomatoes
The 'Sungold F1' cherry tomato is a real sweet tomato that delights big and small tomato lovers with its high yield and sweet taste. The fruits taste best when they are still warm from the sun and straight from the plant. The golden-yellow fruits are also very suitable for drying, so you can also benefit from the aromatic 'Sungold F1' tomatoes outside of the season. A homemade tomato jam made from the sweet Sungold fruits is particularly delicious.
