The kohlrabi that most people know from the supermarket has the typical light green colour. However, there are also lesser known varieties with a deviating standard shape and color. The taste and shelf life, as well as the harvest quantity, do not really change differently with these varieties, but they are an optical eye-catcher. In general, many of the tried and tested strains are of good texture and taste great. Even with a fairly late harvest, there is hardly any lignification to be expected.
Ordering seeds for growing kohlrabi is easy either from us or buy them in the local garden center. However, it is also possible to plant young plants of different varieties.
We have put together a few particularly recommended varieties for you below:
- Azurstar: fast-growing, very early variety; purple tubers.
- Blaro: reddish-violet kohlrabi variety; much appreciated for their delicate and good taste; high yield and bolt resistant.
- Delicacy blauer: rapidly growing variety with violet, round tubers; beautiful look.
- Delicious white: fast-growing variety with medium-sized, light green kohlrabi; very tender and good aroma.
- Delikatess Witte: light green and flattened round tubers; good taste.
- Express Forcer (F1): rapidly growing, very early variety; the kohlrabi meat is very tender and tasty; popular in commercial cultivation.
- Giant: slow growing; Harvest season starts in August; the name says it all Giant, can reach tuber weights of up to 5.5 kilos; do not harvest too late, otherwise the meat will be very woody and hardly edible; harvested at the right time, the tubers are tender and can be stored for a long time.
- Knaufs Frühweiß: very early variety; develops light green and flat-topped tubers; popular, traditional variety.
