The numerous salsify varieties differ mainly in taste, size, origin and harvest time. When buying seeds, you should pay attention to the respective properties. There are earlier and later varieties.
In the following we at Plantura have put together a few well-known and proven varieties that thrive well in our latitudes:
- Antonia: High yield; high yielding variety with long and unbranched long roots.
- Duplex: High-yielding variety with long and unbranched roots; great taste.
- Annual Giants: Variety with long, deep black, and unbranched roots; easy to harvest; pleasant aroma and nice taste.
- Hoffmann's black stake: Well-established variety with longer roots, good storability and pleasant taste; easy harvesting of the roots.
- Meres: New high-yielding variety with unbranched roots; resistant to powdery mildew.
- Russian Giants: Traditional variety with good characteristics; Hardly any roots in sufficiently deeply loosened soil.
- Schwarzer Peter: Well-established variety with a nice aroma; compact growth with high yields.
- Improved Non-shooting Giant: Well-known variety with very long, unbranched and smooth roots; very good aroma.
- Verbeterde Reuzen Nietschieters: Long and quite thick, hardly branched roots; high yield and easy to store.
