Peppermint is easy to care for, making it the perfect herb for starting your own kitchen garden. With our tips it will definitely work!

Peppermint has long made a name for itself as a medicinal and spice plant in Europe

Herbal tea that you pick yourself is a wonderful thing. Fortunately, one of the most popular tea herbs in Germany, peppermint (Mentha x piperita), is very easy to grow and can be grown without any maintenance for most of the year grow towards In the ideal location, it even multiplies by itself.

Growing peppermint in the garden

  1. Location: Nutritious, humus-rich soil in a partially shaded location is important. A root barrier is recommended to prevent excessive spreading by root suckers. Peppermint also thrives in pots on balconies and terraces. It is best to use a peat-free, high-quality organic soil such as our Plantura organic universal soil.
  2. Reproduction: As a natural hybrid, peppermint does not form seeds, but reproduces itself by root suckers. The plants only have to be divided and are therefore easy to propagate.
  3. Watering and fertilizing: In contrast to Mediterranean herbs, peppermint likes it moist, but only needs additional watering after planting out and during longer dry periods. A mulch layer of leaves or grass clippings prevents the soil from drying out. A light fertilizer application in spring helps the plants to get the new gardening season off to a good start. For this you should ideally use a primarily organic organic fertilizer such as our Plantura organic universal fertilizer with a three-month long-term effect.
  4. Overwintering: Peppermint is well adapted to our climate and is therefore sufficiently hardy, but a light winter protection from brushwood cannot hurt.
  5. Harvest and Storage: Single leaves can be picked all year round, but the main harvest season is just before flowering in July. The upper parts of the shoots are harvested, which can then be dried or frozen.
  6. Pruning: It is advisable to cut back close to the ground in autumn.
