There are 15 different types of ivy worldwide. Although ivy are poisonous, they are often kept as houseplants. Probably the most popular and well-known types for the apartment are the golden ivy (Epipremnum aureum) and the spotted ivy (Epipremnum pinnatum). Tip: A climbing houseplant is also Scindapsus pictus, which, to the general confusion, also has the trivial name “Spotted Ivy”. Like the real ivy, it belongs to the arum family (Araceae), which explains the similarity of the plants to one another.
Epipremnum aureum
This is one of the best-known types of ivy. It bears heart-shaped leaves that are arranged alternately on the shoot. The color and pattern of the leaves can vary depending on the variety.
- ˈGolden Queenˈ: Probably the most common ivy 'Golden Queen' has green leaves that are variegated golden yellow. It is also called golden ivy or gold tendril.

- ˈGlacierˈ: The leaves of this cultivar are green with strongly contrasting white stripes, partly streaked with gray and silver.
- ˈJadeˈ: This ivy is dark green. The cultivar bears unicoloured leaves without a pattern and thus comes very close to the original Epipremnum aureum.
- ‘Shangri La’: The green leaves of this variety are twisted, very shiny and look particularly unusual.

Epipremnum pinnatum

Warning: The coloring and pattern of the leaves varies greatly within a variety and depends, for example, on the location. If the plant is in too dark a place, the leaves will lose their pattern and turn green.
There are a few other types of ivy, but not all of them are offered for keeping indoors. Species that are rarely found, but which are nevertheless suitable as house plants, are for example Epipremnum amplissimum and Epipremnum giganteum. Both have elongated, lanceolate leaves.
