After winter, it's time to get the garden ready for the warmer months of the year. We show which garden work is pending in spring and summer.

Gardening starts again in March

There is a lot to do in the garden in spring and summer: once the beds and lawn have been cleared of winter leftovers, you can dig, sow and fertilize. Then vegetables, fruit, herbs, lawns, bushes and trees grow and thrive well into the summer. So you can enjoy your garden in all its glory. However, before you can start with the actual work, you need to check whether the garden tools are still working and have survived the winter undamaged. Spades and scissors should be cleaned and sharpened. If the hoses, seals and taps are still intact, you can start gardening.

Spring Gardening: Preparing the Garden

In spring, work is done to prepare the garden for the summer months. Then there is less to do for the coming season. You can start gardening when the soil is dry so that no more soil sticks to the garden tools.

Get the ground ready

Once you have freed the soil from its protective mulch and leaves after the frosty nights have ended, you can gradually start working. Soils high in loam and clay should now be dug up in the spring if you haven't already done so in the fall.

The floor should then be allowed to rest before it is tilled. In time, the microorganisms return to the upper layers and the temperature rises slightly. The soil must be supplied with lime every two to three years. This improves the pH of the soil, which has been acidified by the rain.

Plant and sow

Spring is the best time to plant the first fruits and vegetables. The earlier the plants can grow in the ground, the stronger they will be. As for the fruit trees, you can now plant apple and cherry. The blackberry is a good choice for the bushes.

From March you can use thestart sowing. Seedlings thrive best when the soil is moist and slightly fertilized with s alt. It is best to use special seed soil for this. The peat-free and sustainable Plantura organic herb and seed soil is ideal for this, for example. What can now be sown in spring are some root and lettuce species. These include carrots, kohlrabi, radishes, cress, arugula, lettuce and lettuce. In April, spinach, broccoli, potatoes, strawberries, aubergines, peppers, leeks, cabbage and asparagus are added.

You can also plant your herbs now. The Plantura organic herb and seed soil is also a good choice for this. Annuals and perennials are also being planted now, as long as it is not too hot outside. However, you should wait with some plants until the ice saints in May are over. Because geraniums, dahlias, begonias, celery, some herbs as well as courgettes, cucumbers, tomatoes and beans do not tolerate frost.

To be on the safe side, you can protect the plants from spontaneous frost with fleece or newspaper. Pumpkins and sweet corn can be planted in early May, Brussels sprouts are best planted towards the end of the month.

Care for the Lawn

In April, the lawn should be aerated and cleared of dead material, weeds, moss and leaves. Then cut the lawn to four to five centimeters and fertilize it. The soil can also be loosened with a scarifier or a rake. The areas where the lawn is no longer so dense should be overseed. On heavy soils, the lawn should be aerated and sanded in the spring. And fertilizing with a primarily organic long-term fertilizer such as our Plantura organic lawn fertilizer also helps the green area to better cope with winter damage.

It is advisable to mow the lawn regularly from the first lawn cut. This is the only way for it to grow dense and he althy. When it comes to lawn mowers for lawn care, there are different variants, each with their advantages and disadvantages. A cylinder lawnmower is light and manoeuvrable and runs without electricity and petrol, but is only suitable for small lawns. Since the lawn is only slightly shortened, you have to mow more often. More practical are corded electric lawn mowers or petrol lawn mowers, which require electricity and petrol. Battery-powered lawnmowers and robotic lawnmowers offer even more convenience.

Shaping the Trees

Pruning of trees, bushes and hedges is also on the agenda in spring. Prune fruit trees before they sprout leaves. The hedges and perennials in particular are now being fertilized so that they can grow well. You should definitely divide perennials that have become too large. The old branches are removed at the base to make room for new shoots. It should be noted, however, that only topiary is permitted between March and October, as this is when the birds breed.

Flowers in ornamental garden

Bulbs such as daffodils, hyacinths and tulips that bloom in spring need a replenishment of nutrients in April or May at the latest. A special lime fertilizer for bulb flowers is best suited. You can cut back the vigorously growing shrubs of the early-flowering shrubs, such as forsythia and cornus, after flowering.

Gardening in Summer: From June to September

If you've prepared well in the spring, there won't be as much gardening left over in the summer. However, there is still a bit to do. Of course, how much work awaits you also depends on what and how much fruit, vegetables, herbs and so on you have in the garden.

How to water correctly

Watering the plants in the garden is sometimes a challenge in summer. That is why it is important to know the water needs of the individual plants. Especially when it's hot outside at midday, you should try not to water. Otherwise the water on the plants will evaporate in the sun. Then the water is gone again unused and the plants burn.

Since the plants need a lot of water, especially in summer, it is advisable to water in the morning or alternatively in the evening. This allows the plants to absorb the liquid better. When watering in summer, the general rule of thumb is: It is better to have enough than several times too little. Watering plentifully is important so that enough water reaches the lower roots.

Pruning of various plants

Towards the end of June, when the shrubs have completed their first growth stage, is the best time to trim the hedge. When shearing, stay in the leafy or needled zone, because cutting back too radically gets some hedge plantsnot.

You should trim young cuttings in June. The shoots that were cut from forsythia, deutzia, weigela and other plants in winter and planted in the ground will sprout in spring if they are successfully cultivated. As soon as they have reached a length of about ten centimetres, they are cut back in half so that the shrubs branch well and grow bushy.

Sowing and Planting

In the warm season, the plants are sown that you want to harvest later in the fall. These include radishes, radishes, spinach, beetroot and winter leeks. You can still overseed bush beans until the beginning of July, which will be ready to harvest eight weeks later. What can still be sown in July is Chinese cabbage, sugar loaf, chard, peas, fennel and radicchio. In addition, the herbs are now being resown so that they are available until autumn. Lawn can be sown until September.

The harvest is coming

In summer it's time to bring the first crops into the house and process them. Tomatoes, cucumbers and zucchini should be removed regularly. Then the plants can use their energy to produce new fruit again, which means they get higher yields overall. In June you can harvest cherries, raspberries, strawberries, currants, tomatoes and other vegetables to your heart's content.
