Neem oil is known as an effective biological pesticide. But it also helps with some of the problems our animal roommates have.

Neem Oil: What is it?
Neem oil is extracted from the seeds of the neem tree (Azadirachta indica), which is native to Asia. If you translate the term neem, you get terms like “the he alth giver” or “the disease reliever”. No wonder, then, that neem oil is a popular remedy in the traditional Indian healing art of Ayurveda. Neem oil consists of more than 100 different ingredients. A particularly important one is azadirachtin, which inhibits the development of insect larvae. But neem is not only a real benefit for your plants, but also for your animal protégés.
Neem oil: protects dogs, cats and horses
Neem oil is also great to use on your pets as it has several beneficial effects that you can take advantage of. Neem oil can be used on pets to treat the following problems:
- Bacteria
- Mushrooms
- Virus
- Inflammation
Neem oil is also used to treat wounds. With bite marks from ticks, eczema or other wounds, you can definitely make use of its disinfecting effect and thus accelerate the healing process.
Because not only our plants in the garden suffer from insects, but also our pets. Fleas, ticks and flies can affect our animals, so it is advisable to mix a teaspoonful of neem oil into the dog shampoo or rub the coat with a few drops of neem oil. This keeps annoying parasites away from your loved ones. If a tick wants to nest in the fur anyway, it will die off after a short time.
Caution: Especially with dogswashing with neem oil can become problematic, as the oil does not necessarily smell pleasant and dogs are known to have a very fine nose. It is therefore advisable to mask the smell of the neem oil with a few drops of tea tree oil.
Since the oil also has a positive effect on skin and hair, it can also be used for grooming horses. Especially in summer, they often suffer from eczema, chafed tails and much more. It is therefore advisable to spray the horses with a diluted neem-water mixture before going out to pasture.
Even if neem oil has many positive properties, caution is advised: Excessive use of neem can irritate your mucous membranes and those of your four-legged friends.
Important: Only use neem products on your animals, especially cats, after consulting a veterinarian. According to the Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL), neem oil is harmless for cats and other pets. However, there is a study in which cats came into contact with neem oil and some showed symptoms such as cramps or tremors.
