Passion flowers are very tolerant of pruning and therefore do not mind a proper pruning. Since they are pronounced climbing plants and can grow very large, pruning can even become obligatory - at the latest when the question of winter quarters arises.

Passion flower when to cut?

In principle, you should prune your passion flower in the spring before it starts growing again. You can now remove the dead plant parts from planted specimens whose above-ground biomass has frozen over the winter. If the above-ground parts survived or if the passion flower was overwintered indoors, pruning is also a good idea.

However, you can also cut back in the fall before moving to the winter quarters to overwinter the passion flower. At this point, the vegetation period is largely over and a proper pruning will certainly make it easier for you to find a suitable place to overwinter.

Since passion flowers only bloom on young and woody shoots, you should cut back the older shoots of the passion flowers. Also, pruning leads to more branching, which is desirable. The shoots can be cut back to up to 15 cm - but in such a way that a few eyes remain. More than five eyes are not necessary. The young shoots then sprout freshly from these in the spring. Be sure to use a clean and sharp tool such as a knife or pruning shears for pruning to prevent disease transmissionavoid.
