In general, all plants of the Araceae family, which also includes ivy, contain toxic substances. Needle-shaped calcium oxalate crystals, which have an irritating effect, are found in all parts of the ivy plant.

The ivy is poisonous for humans. Depending on the person affected, poisoning can occur in varying degrees, especially after the consumption of large amounts of plant parts. For this reason, ivy is particularly dangerous for children, since their low body weight is in an unfavorable ratio to the amount of poison ingested even after small amounts have been consumed. So do not eat any part of the ivy and wear gloves when repotting or cutting. Place the ivy out of the reach of children and pets or do without the plant altogether. Due to the needle-like structure of the calcium oxalate crystals, it is possible for skin irritation or blistering to occur if touched.
