Brunch roses are becoming more and more popular due to their compact growth habit. We present the most beautiful standard rose varieties in all sizes from dwarf to standard.

Standard roses also get by with little space and can be combined well with other plants

If you are bored of roses (Pink) in bush or trellis form, we have just the thing for you here. Richly flowering standard roses are a real eye-catcher and can even be found in a small garden. Colloquially, the rose tree is also often mentioned. However, roses usually do not form stems by nature. In order for a bed, shrub or climbing rose to become a standard rose, a suitable variety must first be selected and grafted onto a specially cultivated wild rose shoot. Regular pruning later will ensure that the crown retains its shape and the rose will produce plenty of blooms throughout the summer.

In the following we explain what distinguishes standard roses and what needs to be considered when caring for them. We also introduce you to some of the most popular varieties of tree roses.

Brunch roses: characteristics and growth habit

Strictly speaking, a standard rose always consists of at least two varieties. In most cases, the rootstock is a robust wild rose variety. For example, a noble or bush rose variety is then grafted onto it, which forms numerous beautiful flowers. However, the growth height of the standard rose does not depend on the variety of the tea rose, but rather on the grafting height on the rootstock. Many tree and rose nurseries therefore offer standard roses with the same variety designation in different sizes, for example as a dwarf standard (up to 50 centimetres), a half standard (up to 70 centimetres) or a standard (90 centimetres). In the case of so-called cascade standard roses (weeping stem), climbing or rambler roses are grafted onto wild roses, which form long, overhanging shoots. They reach a trunk height of 120 to 140 centimetres.

Regular pruning is important for standard roses so that the shape of the crown is maintained

If you don't have your own garden, smaller varieties can also be placed in a large pot orplant tubs. As with planted specimens, care depends on the grafted variety. Regular pruning in spring (March/April) ensures that the crown shape is retained. A wind-protected location is also a must for the graceful standard roses. A support stick and a special rose stand or umbrella can give the rose extra support in windy weather. In order to overwinter your standard roses successfully, you should protect them both in the bed and in the pot so that they are not damaged. The best way to winterize your rose is with a crown pad and trunk protection made of jute sacks or bamboo mats. Here we explain how to properly overwinter standard roses.
