So that ivy doesn't suddenly overgrow everything, you should cut it regularly. We show what needs to be considered when cutting ivy.

Did you know that ivy shoots (Hedera helix) can grow up to two meters per year? With such growth, a pruning quickly becomes indispensable. Luckily, it's pretty straightforward and the plant doesn't mind hard pruning. So you can let off steam in peace. However, there are a few things to consider.
Pruning Ivy
Ivy doesn't actually need to be pruned. Even without any action, the plant can become several hundred years old and form dense green cushions, thick lianas or even bushes. Due to their pronounced tendency to spread in the form of fast-growing shoots, however, pruning is often unavoidable. But don't worry, you won't damage the ivy anytime soon.
Pruning ivy: the right time
In principle, you can cut back ivy throughout the year. The robust plant recovers quite quickly and reliably. A cutting time in spring or late summer is optimal. However, keep in mind that ivy is a valuable habitat, especially with more ruthless pruning. Birds in particular love the cover of ivy as a nesting place. So be careful and show consideration for the animals.
Since ivy does not theoretically need to be pruned back, you can adjust the pruning frequency to suit your needs. Even with ivy hedges, it is usually enough to put the knife on once a year. If you prefer a well-formed, accurate hedge, a double pruning may be necessary. Choose a day without frost or strong sun for pruning, as injuries are sensitive to extreme weather conditions.
Cutting ivy: The right way to do it
How you want to cut back your ivy naturally depends entirely on your requirements. Ivy on house facades or walls often has to be trimmed, especially at the tips, so that it doesn't overgrow windows, doors or paths. But beware: ivycan climb up to 20 meters up walls, houses and trees. Be sure to be careful when cutting. The danger of falling while pruning and seriously injuring yourself is not to be underestimated. In addition to the shoot tips, woody trunks can also be pruned on very old plants. Ivy easily survives being attacked by wood. You can even remove whole shoots from the plant.

If you own an ivy hedge, then you can confidently unpack your hedge trimmers and trim the ivy like any other hedge. We will tell you more details about the proper care of your ivy here.
